Ice Storm 2011- Day 1

So, we have been hearing about this crazy storm that was supposed to hit for the last few days. Here was the report - freezing rain that could result in up to an inch of ice on everything, then the weight from the ice could potentially snap electric lines- leaving many without power or heat, followed by up to 10 inches of snow, and then drifting and winds of up to 40 miles an hour. I have to admit that my first reaction was this - Pa-lease! We seem to get a lot of storm warnings, everyone panics and stores sell out of the basics, and then the storm is usually not anywhere near what was predicted. And boy have people been panicking over this one. Jared stopped by the store on the way home last night - the bread was completely sold out, the peanut butter and jam area was seriously depleted, no bananas either, the lunch meat was almost gone. So many people were trying to call each other that the phone lines were jammed and it took three or four tries to get a call to go through, if you got through at all! It was pretty crazy!

Then about 7 pm, the freezing rain started. I really hate that stuff - it is way worse than snow. If you are driving in it, it freezes as soon as it hits your windshield and is just scary! Jared got a phone call around 8:30 last night that school was already cancelled (he typically doesn't hear until the morning of). The storm was upon us! When we woke up this morning, our windows were covered in a layer of ice. We ventured out a little later to see what the storm had brought so far. Here are some of our pictures and videos:
Jared did a great job showing off that our driveway could double as an ice skating rink!
Tori wanted to try it out too!!!

This is our grass completely covered in a layer of ice!
Our poor house looks so cold!
Basically, there is ice everywhere!!!
We were being really careful on our driveway!
But not always careful enough...

So, this storm may turn out to be just what was predicted. We are suppose to get more freezing rain through the day and then tons of snow tonight. So far, we are warm, still have our power, and are enjoying our snow day with Jared! We'll see what the next couple of days bring!
